Parish nurses help prevent illness by teaching how to maintain wellness through health education, counseling and support groups. They integrate spirituality and holistic health into modern wellness techniques, and are becoming increasingly popular in faith communities to help 'bridge the gap' between religion and modern health care.
There are many dimensions to parish nurses. They play a variety of roles including educator, counselor and advocate in their own faith family. And they are a source for preventative and restorative care, ministering holistically to individuals and families. One role parish nurses do not play is that of direct medical care provider.
The parish nurse ministry includes:
- Integrates Faith & Health: With a knowledge in both areas, the parish nurse can offer clarification as a "translator" between faith & healthcare communities.
- Health Educator: Provides educational programs to the parish such as health screenings & illness prevention.
- Health Counselor: Provides individual health counseling services in the home or long-term care facility.
- Health Advocate: Assists parish community in finding their way through healthcare systems.
- Referral Agent: Offers resources to agencies, organizations and support services to improve quality-of-life.
- Establishes Support Groups: Initiates and organizes groups within the parish oo assist with specific health-issues.
- Trainer of Volunteers: Recruits & trains volunteers to provide assistance.
