From Our Pastor

Welcome!

Dear Friends of St. Andrew's,

From the founding of our Parish in 1958, we have grown and developed with Sierra Vista - as partners in building up this great community we call home.

Over the decades, we sought to be active participants in every aspect of community life. We believe that serving the common good and making this city a place where people come first, where the least and most easily-overlooked are served and cared for, and where the quality of life is enhanced for all our fellow citizens, is an essential witness to our faith.

We hope our parish church is a place where all experience the Presence of God and the welcome of God's People. We pray that its beauty will speak a wordless invitation to those who are seeking, those who are wearied by life's burdens and those who are drawn to lift their hearts in prayer.

We thank God for giving us this opportunity to extend His blessings and to share our church and campus facilities with the Sierra Vista community.

The pulse of St. Andrew's is reflected through our ministries and individual parishoner efforts. I hope to highlight these achievements and bring focus to upcoming events in the article following this message.

Yours because His,

Bienvenido

Padre Greg Adolf

Did You Know...?

. . . That we try to balance the need of parishioners to ‘connect’ with each other and the need for reverent quiet before and after Mass?

There has been a gradual ‘erosion’ in the attention to silence, or at least ‘reverent quiet’, especially before the Mass begins.

However, a parish church is not a “private oratory” for a ‘few’ – it belongs to all of |the Faithful of the parish, and that means that there must be an accommodation to different styles of prayer and devotion; the need to acknowledge and greet other parishioners AND the need to prepare quietly for the Encounter with the Living God.

The Divine Mercy Chapel, which was designed as a place of greater quiet, Eucharistic Adoration and more ‘private prayer’, also welcomes, at different times: public Novenas (Our Lady of Perpetual Help – on Wednesdays), Monday evening Rosario, charismatic Prayer Groups, Men’s Prayer Group, the monthly Mass for our Korean Community, and, occasionally, even a wedding!

That’s the nature of a parish church, (as distinct from a monastery or a private oratory) – it must be open to all and welcoming of different spiritual needs, prayer styles, and devotions, with primary emphasis, of course, on the Sacred Liturgy. Catholic churches are not simply “houses of prayer”, they are a particular and unique location of the Divine Presence!

Because the community (not just ‘individuals’) gathers here, it is understood that there will be a certain amount of conversation and conviviality, as we greet and ‘connect’ with our sisters and brothers in Christ. The community itself, is, according to Catholic teaching, a place of the “Presence of the Lord”. And so, it is entirely appropriate to acknowledge the presence of one another and express our appreciation for the reality of this particular community. We need to reverence the Presence of God in the gathered Community – in each other. The ‘announcement time’, before Mass starts, is understood to be a moment when we can acknowledge one another – in the Lord’s Presence – and affirm the bonds of community, hence the announcements about those things which touch upon the spiritual health and well-being of the Community, now gathered. (In some parishes, this is done at the end of Mass, before the final Prayer or before the Dismissal – there is no ‘hard-and-fast’ rule on when announcements are to be made.)

Again, it is really about finding an appropriate balance between the genuine need of the Community to make person-to-person connection as an expression of the ‘Body of Christ’ AND the individual worshiper’s need to prayerfully prepare to enter the Presence of God – in Word and Sacrament! As with so much else in our Catholic Faith, it is not an “either/or” but a “both/and”! It’s really about finding the balance: of reverence for God AND of respect for others!

Food For Your Soul

“Eschatology is the fulfillment of the Easter faith of the Church. Faith in the Returning Lord is only the fruit of faith in the Risen Lord. The world cannot remain as it is, because Christ did not remain in the grave!”

This Week's Catholic Quiz

This week’s Question: “What is the ‘Power of the Keys’”?

The Answer to Last Week’s Question: “Who was ‘Pere Marquette”? A city in Michigan, lakes in Wisconsin, steamships, and even a railroad serving the upper mid-west, are named for this intrepid Jesuit missionary/explorer! Born in France in 1637, he served in French Canada, founding the first European settlement in Michigan – Sault Ste. Marie. In 1673, Pere (‘Father’ in French) Jacques Marquette and layman Louis Joliet, and five other Frenchmen, began their expedition to explore the Mississippi River. Their two-year expedition proved that the Mississippi flows south to empty in the Gulf of Mexico, rather than west to the Pacific, as was popularly thought! (Like his fellow Jesuit, Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino, he was first and foremost a missionary, seeking the salvation of souls – but the explorations that they made, in search of new Native Peoples to evangelize, changed the maps of the world!) Pere Marquette died on the return journey to Canada, but his travel diaries were carried back and carefully read! There are four Roman Catholic Priests who ‘represent’ their States in the U.S. House of Representatives Hall of Statuary: Padre Eusebio Kino (Arizona), Pere Marquette (Wisconsin), Padre Junipero Serra (California) and St. Damien of Moloki (Hawaii)!
