Father Voigt followed Fr. Thomas Millane as our pastor in 1980. Serving us for 11 years, he was our longest tenured pastor prior to our current pastor, Fr. Greg Adolf. Richard Voigt was born in March 1937 in Chicago, IL to Edward and Lily Voigt.
He was educated at Villanova and Loyola Universities, as well as seminaries for the Order of St. Augustine. He was ordained for the Augustinian Order on February 6,1965, by Bishop Aloyisius Wycislo, auxiliary bishop in Chicago.
Six years later, Fr. Voigt was permitted to leave his Order, and in 1973 was incardinated into the Diocese of Tucson. Before coming to St. Andrew’s, Fr. Voigt had assignments at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Casa Grande, Our Mother of Sorrows Parish in Tucson, and St. Pius X Parish in Tucson. It was during Fr. Voigt’s time as our pastor that Our Lady of the Mountains Parish and Good Shepherd Mission in Whetstone were begun as our parish missions. Fr. Voigt was also a member of the Arizona National Guard, and in 1990 deployed as chaplain with his unit to Honduras.
In 1991, Fr. Voigt was assigned as pastor to St. Ambrose Parish in Tucson. He died from cancer in November, 1993 at the age of 56.
