From Our Pastor

Welcome!

Dear Friends of St. Andrew's,

From the founding of our Parish in 1958, we have grown and developed with Sierra Vista - as partners in building up this great community we call home.

Over the decades, we sought to be active participants in every aspect of community life. We believe that serving the common good and making this city a place where people come first, where the least and most easily-overlooked are served and cared for, and where the quality of life is enhanced for all our fellow citizens, is an essential witness to our faith.

We hope our parish church is a place where all experience the Presence of God and the welcome of God's People. We pray that its beauty will speak a wordless invitation to those who are seeking, those who are wearied by life's burdens and those who are drawn to lift their hearts in prayer.

We thank God for giving us this opportunity to extend His blessings and to share our church and campus facilities with the Sierra Vista community.

The pulse of St. Andrew's is reflected through our ministries and individual parishoner efforts. I hope to highlight these achievements and bring focus to upcoming events in the article following this message.

Yours because His,

Bienvenido

Padre Greg Adolf

Did You Know...

...That ours is a very “Marian” Parish, with many visible signs of our great devotion to Our Lady?

In this month of Mary you can actually make a virtual Pilgrimage ‘visiting’ the Marian shrines and images in our own Parish church! The church bells sound forth the Angelus each day at Noon and at 6:00 PM from the “Ave Maria Tower” (a gift of the Knights of Columbus). The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe crowns the south façade of the church, as well as the shrine dedicated to her, located on the west end of Kino Hall, depicting St. Juan Diego knelling before the Apparition. Another image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is enshrined above the entrance of Madonna Hall. A beautiful statue of Our Lady of Grace stands in the Memorial Prayer Garden, and many stop to pray at the Shrine to the Holy Family in the south parking lot. Located in the Gathering Room of the church is the image of Our Lady Who Unties Knots. The special significance of this image our Lady, which was made enormously popular by the devotion to her by Pope Francis, is that ours was only the second such parish shrine to Her in the United States! Pick up a ‘holy card’ and pray the prayer written for our Parish’s use! When you enter the main part of the church itself, you see that a Rosary ‘railing’ in cast stone surrounds the whole Sanctuary, a detail repeated in the Divine Mercy Chapel. This is a feature that is unique to St. Andrew’s and is pointed out to our visitors – that one actually ‘prays within’ the Rosary while at Mass! The principal image of Our Lady in the church is the Madonna and Child carved in Oberammergau for our original church (1958), enshrined at the front of the Sanctuary, she has been designated as “Our Lady of St. Andrew’s”. The full-sized image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the first niche on the east side is paralleled by an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the west side of the church. In the Divine Mercy Chapel you will find the images of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Our Lady of La Vang, and Our Lady of Czestochowa – each important to our Filipino, Vietnamese, and Polish communities! We will celebrate the Silver Rose Rosary on 28 May with the Knights of Columbus – more on this later! We are a “Marian” Parish and it is not just the many and varied images of Our Lady, but the many Marian devotions - so many Rosaries, Novenas, and other expressions of love for Our Lady – which take place every day, throughout the week! Thank you -- for your love for God, your love for Our Lady, and for your love for your Church! “We should be very grateful that someone loves our Lord as much as He deserves – His Mother!” ---- St. Teresa of Avila

OK, so, what happens when the offertory plate is passed to me at Mass and I don't place anything in it?
Good question.  Matthew 6:4 says "...so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you."

Food For Your Soul

“It is not to remain in a golden ciborium that He comes to us each day from heaven: it’s to find another heaven infinitely more dear to Him than the first: the heaven of our soul, made in His image, the living temple of the adorable Trinity!” -- St. Therese of Lisieux (1873-1897)

This Week's Catholic Quiz

This week’s Question: “How is the Jewish Feast of Pentecost (“Shavuvot”) related to the Christian Feast of Pentecost?”

The Answer to Last Week’s Question: “What is the origin of a ‘Novena’?” A prayer with a specific intention offered nine days in a row, originated in the nine (Latin: novem) days of prayer by the Apostles, disciples, and the Blessed Virgin between Ascension and Pentecost –(Acts 1:12,14). A “Novena of Grace” was traditionally prayed in March (introduced to this area by our own Padre Eusebio Kino!) There is Novena prayed for the nine days leading up to the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe in December, as well as a “Christmas Novena” begins 16 December and honors the mystery of Christmas. Today the recommended (and only Scriptural) novena is the one preceding Pentecost!
